The MMM Transaction

Question: To be straight to the point, I’d like to ask, is the MMM business system is considered usury?. You may not know yet what is MMM. MMM or Mavrodj Mondial Moneybox is a community founded by Mr. Sergey Mavrodi to prosper the member/participant of that community by helping each other among members, with a reward of 30% per month, or more. Thus, in this business system, there are circulating money among members by transferring to one another.

In this system, there is what so-called PH, a short for Provide Help. After 1 month, we do GH (Get Help) and we get 30%. The problem is where do that 30 % come from? The 30 % come from this pattern: For example, we as A. A will provide help as many as 1 million, then the system will randomly choose people who’ll accept that help, and those people should simultaneously make GH application. The scheme is:

– A transfers to B IDR 100,000

– A transfers to C IDR 500,000

– A transfers to D IDR 400,000

Then after approximately one month, mavro IDR (rupiah in the form of mavro) will add 30% to our money. And after the due time, and the mavro IDR has reached 1,300,000, we automatically GH. The system has arranged it and people who’ll give help are different from the previous ones.

– E transfers to A IDR 200,000

– F transfers to A IDR 500,000

– G transfers to A IDR 100,000

– H transfers to A IDR 500,000

E, F, G, H are playing as PH, and A as GH.

Thus, the money will always circulate and time of each member to be PH or GH will not be the same.

I’m asking whether or not this system regarded as usurious? It is evident that our intention to help is sincere without hoping for return, and people thar we help are different from the one gives us help.

Answer:

In the name of Allah, peace and prayer of Allah be upon His messenger.

Islam teaches us to give alms and donation to seek for rewards in the Hereafter. Whenever we prepare some money to be donated, we already intend to get the rewards in the Hereafter.

The example of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah is like that of a grain of corn that sprouts seven ears, and in every ear there are a hundred grains. Thus Allah multiplies the action of whomsoever He wills. Allah is Munificent, All-Knowing. Those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah and do not follow up their spending by stressing their benevolence and causing hurt, will find their reward secure with their Lord. They have no cause for fear and grief. (Chapter Al Baqara/The Cow:261-262)

The Messenger of Allah – peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- also advised us, so that no matter how small that we give, we give it due to our fear of Allah’s punishment. ,

Fear the Hell, (and protect yourself from it) even with a half of date fruit. If you don’t have it, then by saying good words.” (Narrated by Bukhari no. 1413, Muslim 1016, and others).

Verses and hadith that speak about this matter are numerous.

Islam also teaches us to give something to other without wishing for greater return. Allah reminded us,

وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ

“and bestow not favor in order to seek from others a greater return,” (Chapter Al Mudatstsir/The Cloaked One:6)

Ibnu interpreted this verse:

لا تعط عطية تلتمس بها أفضل منها

’Do not give something to seek for a better return.’ (See: Tafseer al Qurthubi, 19/67).

This is how Islam teaches the muslims, to build the non-profit spirit in doing the social deeds. Moreover to wish for return from the aid given.

It all shows that the MMM transaction is not in line with some principles of Islam, thus it shouldn’t be preserved.

Allah knows best.

  1. MMM money is it acceptable or not

    1. Haven’t you read anything? It absolutely isn’t acceptable because no one does it for the sake of helping but for the sake of getting 30% return. It’s a dishonest transaction where people do it for the sole purpose of helping themselves.

  2. Amsat Abdulrasaq says:

The MMM business has been introduced to me since last year, but it was when I keep on getting encourage by some of my friend, that’s is why I decided to make enquiry on Islamic perspective on this as I was initially convinced of where the 30% comes up.But now that I have read your own view with an evidence from the Qu’ran and Sunnah am now satisfy.May Allah guids us towards a deeds that will benefit us in this life and hereafter(Aamin).I say Jazakallah khaeran.Allah knows everything.

  3. Amsat Abdulrasaq says:

From the verses of Al’Quran you coated. If look at MMM critically we will discover that someone you provided help(PH) for is not the one you get help from(GH).And more also there is a mutual agreement between the system.Though,to me I still need more evidence to convince myself, because what I know in Islam is there is agreement between two party in term of business(for instance if Mr A and Mr B agreed that Mr A will lend Mr B a some of money either for business and at the end of business the profit will be sharing based on what they agreed on either 70% to 30%)is allowed.

  4. Salihu Mahmoud Toyin says:

Sallam Alyekum. To my own point of view, MMM is completely Usury simply because the intention why people involved in it is to get 30% profit in return. Nobody will lease someone money online without expecting profit in return. An Hadit says “Action shall be jurge Accord to intention”.

I also perceived mmm to be haram. Because it include interest. If it is the actual money u put en u gt it bak wiv out d interest dat is beta. Muslims dnt consume interest. Allahu alam(Allah knws best)

  14. JazakAllahu khayran for the reply. I will like clarification to be made on the difference btw partnership between capital(someone with money) and Labour(another without money but knowledge of knowhknowhow) where both profit and loss is shared and MMM.

  15. AbdukAfeez Daramola says:

@ Amsat AbdulRosaq, truly, Islamic permits business between partners as long as the agreement n the business is halal. their must b agreement on d profit/loss sharing. each member must agree that he/she will share in any lost or profit dat occurs during d cos of d business. the money pledged for the partnership must be used for halal investment n the term of running it must be agreed upon.
unlike mmm, the fund provided by the member is not used fr any business. it only goes to another member who has provided help to another member(s) in d past. it is another member that will refund him as well. thus, it is non business organisation.
also, no agreement is made on how the lost wil be shared any day the system crashes.
