10 Things You Need to Know about the New Year Celebration

All praises be to Allaah, The Lord that continuously graces us with His guidance. Peace and prayer be upon Prophet Muhammad, his family, his friends, and people who follow him until the end of time.

Recently, people from around the world are eagerly anticipating the celebration of new year, an event obviously happens only once in each year. Such as their enthusiasm, that they are more than willing to wait for the year to change even if they have to work overtime. However, what is the correct Islamic perspective of this celebration? Is it permissible to join and celebrate it? Hopefully this concise article can shed a light on the answers of this question.

History of New Year

The new year was first celebrated on the 1st of January, year 45 BC (before century or common era). Not long after Julius Caesar was crowned as the emperor of Rome, he decided to replace the Roman traditional calendar which dated back to the seventh centuries BC, with the new one. In designing the new calendar, he was assisted by Sosigenes, an astronomer from Alexandria. He advised that the new calendar was created by following the sun’s revolution, as practiced by the Egyptians. A year in that new calendar consisted of 365 and one fourth of days, and Caesar added 67 days to year 45 BC, thus the year 46 BC was started on the 1st January. Caesar also ordered that every four year, a day be added on February, which theoretically could avoid any deviation in this calendar. Shortly before Caesar was killed in year 44 BC, he changed the name of month Quintilis to his name, Julius, or July. Then, the name of month Sextilis was changed into the name of Caesar’s successor, Emperor Augustus, or August. (Source: http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahun_baru]

Based on this information, we can see that the new year celebration was inaugurated by the disbelievers, and not from Islam. The new year celebration occurred on the time of the change of the year according to Gregorian calendar, which has long been celebrated by the disbelievers.

Here are several ill-effects to a muslim, resulting from celebrating the new year.

First, Celebrating new year means celebrating an unlawful ‘eid (festival)

It is important to note that muslims have two ‘ied to celebrate, ‘Eid al Fithri and ‘Eid al Adha. Anas ibn Malik said,

“In the past, the ignorants had two days (the Nairuz and Mihrojan) in every year, in which they played and had fun. When the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- arrived in Medina, he said, ‘You had two days of festive in the past. Now, Allaah has replaced it with two days that are better, the ‘Eid al Fithri and ‘Eid al Adha,” [Narrated by An Nasa’i, no. 1556. Sheikh Al Albani stated that it is a sound hadith].

But after that, there are some other ‘eids that are celebrated among muslims. Some are meant for worshipping rituals, and some are made merely to imitate the disbelievers. One of the celebration that we meant here is the celebration of the Christian’s new year (or the Common Era). This kind of celebration is not included in the better ones that the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- mentioned before, i.e., the ‘Eid al Fithri and ‘Eid al Adha.

The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas (Al-Lajnah Ad Da-imah lil Buhuts ‘Ilmiyyah wal Ifta’) explained it as follows:

The Standing Committee said, “What is meant by the terminology of ‘Eid or festive day is every form of gathering that is held periodically, be it annually, monthly, weekly, and so on. Therefore, it has some elements, i.e.:

It is a day that happens in repetition, such as ‘Eid al Fithri or Friday.
Many people specifically gather on that day.
Various activities are held on it, whether in the form of rituals or non rituals.

The Ruling of ‘Eid are categorized into two:

‘Eid that is celebrated with the purpose of worshipping, getting closer to Allaah, and glorify that day in order to obtain divinely rewards, or
‘Eid that contains elements of imitating the ignorants or other sects of disbelievers; it is forbidden, as it is considered innovation that is mentioned in a hadith of the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him-

“Whoever innovates something into this matter of ours which does not belong to it, will have it rejected.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

For example, the commemoration of the Prophet’s birthday (mawlid), Mother’s Day, and Independence Day. Commemorating the Prophet’s birthday is forbidden because it is considered as inventing new rituals which Allaah has not permitted, in addition of imitating the Christians and other disbelievers. Whereas the Mother’s Day and Independence Day celebration are forbidden because it resembles the act of the disbelievers.” [Fatwas Issued by Al-Lajnah Ad-Da-imah lil Buhuts ‘Ilmiyyah wal Ifta‘, 3/88-89, Fatwa no. 9403, Mawqi’ Al-Ifta’.] –

This is the explanation from the Committee.

Likewise, new year celebration is among the forbidden cleberations, since it imitates the festival of the disbelievers.

Second, Celebrating new year means Imitating the disbelievers in their Habit

Celebrating new year is considered as imitating the disbelievers. And it is clear to us that the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- had warned us since centuries ago, that this ummah will follow the footsteps of the Persian, the Romans, the Jews, and the Christians. The muslims will follow them in the way they dressed, even in their day of feast (‘eid).

From Abu Huraira, the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- said,

“The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until my followers copy the deeds of the previous nations and follow them very closely, span by span, and cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch).” Then it was said, “O Messenger of Allaah! Do you mean like the Persians and the Byzantines?,”. The Prophet said, “Who can it be other than they?,” [Narrated by Bukhari no. 7319, from Abu Huraira]

From Abu Sa’id al Khudri, he said that the Messenger of Allaah -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- said,

“You would tread the same path as was trodden by those before you inch by inch and step by step so much so that if they had entered into the hole of the lizard (that is tortuous, -trns), you would follow them in this also.” We said, “O Messenger of Allaah, do you mean by those before you, the Jews and Christians?,” He said, “Who else (than those two groups)?,” [Narrated by Muslim no. 2669, from Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri.]

An Nawawy -peace be upon him- explained this hadith, “What is meant by syibr (a span) and dziro’ dhob (the tortuous hole of a lizard), is the parable that the actions of the muslims will very much resemble the Jews and the Christians, i.e., they will follow them in committing evil and various misdeeds, not in their disbelief. These words is among his miracles, because what he said is happening in these days.” [See: Al Minhaj Syarh Shohih Muslim, Abu Zakariya Yahya Ibn Syarf An-Nawawi, 16/220, Dar Ihya’ At-Turats Al-‘Arabiy, second edition, 1392.]

Look at what the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- said. His words are really coming into reality. The muslims are copying various models of attire donned by the westers, even if it is half-naked ones. Likewise, they are copying various celebrations they have, including the new year one.

Bear it in mind that the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- had firmly prohibited us from imitating the disbelievers (tasyabbuh).

He said,

“Whoever imitates a clan, will be one of them.” [Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Daud. Sheikh al Islam commented in his book, Iqtidha‘ (1/269) said that the status of this hadith is jayyid/good. Sheikh Al Albani said that this is a sound hadith, see: Irwa’ul Ghalil no. 1269.]

Imitating the disbelievers here including their clothes, appearance, and habit. This imitation is forbidden according to the Qur’an, the sunnah, and consensus of the scholars (ijma’). [See the quote of the consensus (ijma’) brought by Sheikh Al Islam Ibn Taimiyya in Iqtidha’ Ash Shiratil Mustaqim, 1/363, Wazaratu Asy Syu-un Al-Islamiyah, seventh edition, year 1417 H.]

Third, Innovating Acts of Worshipping without Any Religious Basis in the Eve of the New Year

We have known that the new year celebration is rooted from the disbelievers and their tradition. Unfortunately, some people without knowledge invented certain rituals on the eve of the new year. They said, ““Rather than wasting their time in vain, it is better for the muslims to spend the new year by performing dhikr in gathering in the mosque. It is certainly more fruitful than waiting for the new year to come without doing anything useful,”.

Inventing these kind of ritual is considered as creating an act of worshipping without any basis or example beforehand. New year celebration itself isn’t celebration or ritual of the muslims; thus, why we do have to create certain ritual for it? Moreover, waiting for the new year to come will result in abandoning various obligations, which we’ll explain later in this article.

If someone said, “It is better to wait for the new year by performing dhikr, rather than wasting time on useless deeds. What matters is that our intention is of a decent one.”

For this statement, it is suffice for us to rebut it with the statement of Ibn Mas’ood, upon seeing people reciting dhikr that was not following the example of the Prophet – peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him-. Those people said to Ibn Mas’ood,

“By Allaah, O Abu ‘Abdurrahman (Ibn Mas’ood), we do not wish except for the goodness.”

Ibn Mas’ood replied,

“How many people aim for the goodness, but aren’t obtaining it, “[Narrated by Ad Darimi. Husein Salim Asad stated that the status of this hadith is jayyid/good.]

Thus, regarding a worshipping act, merely a decent intention is not enough. Rather, we are obliged to follow the example from the Prophet – peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him-; only by then, Allaah will accept that act.

Fourth, Committing Forbidden Act by Offering Congratulation in New Year

We have known that new year is one of the characteristics of the disbelievers and is not from the muslims’ customs. Thus, it is inappropriate for a muslim to exchange greetings in this occasion, which is the trait of the disbelievers. It is prohibited to do so, according to the consensus of the scholars (ijma’).

In his book, “Ahkam Ahli Dzimmah”, Ibn Al-Qayyim said, “As for exchanging greetings on the day that is an exclusively done by the disbelievers (such as offering Christmas greetings, -ed) is forbidden, according to the scholars’ consensus. I.e, congratulating them on their day of feast or fasting, by saying, “May you be blessed in this day,” or by other form of greetings. Even if, say, this person doesn’t fall into the infidelity yet, but he has committed forbidden deed. Congratulating them on the day of their feast is similar to congratulating them for prostrating before the cross; this is of even a more terrible sin in Allaah’s side. Allaah loathes such congratulatory act even more than His loathes for people congratulating those who drink alcohols, murder, commit adultery, or other kind of evildoings.

Many people who do not understand their religion fall into committing this grave sin, as they are oblivious of its wickedness. Hence, whosoever offers congratulation to those who commit evils, innovation, or infidelity, is deserving of Allaah’s loathe and His wrath. [See: Ahkam Ahli Dzimmah, Ibn Qayyim Al Jauziyah, 1/441, Dar Ibnu Hazm, first edition, 1418 H.]

Fifth, Abandoning Obligation, i.e., The Compulsory Prayer

It is not uncommon that we’ve witnessed many people staying up late in anticipation of the new year to come, then continue it until 1 or 2 a.m, or even until morning, and thus, abandoning the obligatory fajr prayer. Some of them skip the Fajr prayer entirely, tired out from their night activity. Hence, they oversleep until midday, and the prayer time is gone unnoticed. Na’udzu billahi min dzalik (may Allaah protect us from it).

Brother, know that abandoning even just one of the five compulsory prayers is not a trivial matter. Furthermore, the scholars have agreed that such abandonment is of grave sin.

Ibn Qayyim – peace be upon him- said, “There is no dispute among muslims that deliberately abandoning the compulsory prayers is of gravest sin, which is worse than the sin of killing, confiscating other’s property, committing adultery, stealing, and consuming intoxication. Whosoever abandons such prayer has submitted himself to receive Allaah’s wrath and punishment, and abjection both in this world and hereafter.” [See: Ash-Shalah wa Hukmu Tarikiha, page. 7, Dar Al Imam Ahmad]

Adz-Dzahabi -peace be upon him- also said, “People who delay his prayer, until its time is gone, has committed a grave sin. The sin of abandoning the prayer -i.e., just one of it – is considered equal to the sin of adultery and stealing, since it is of grave sins. Hence, whosoever repeatedly neglect it, is considered as perpetrator of grave sin until he repent. Indeed, anyone who abandons the prayer, is harming himself, a wretched, and a sinner. [See: Al-Kaba’ir, page. 26-27, Darul Kutub Al ‘Ilmiyyah.]

The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- even threatened anyone who deliberately abandons the five compulsory prayers with infidelity. Buraidah bin Al Hushoib Al Aslamiy said, “I heard the Messenger of Allaah -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- declared,

“The agreement between us and them (the disbelievers) is the prayer. Whosoever abandons it has committed infidelity.” [Narrated by Ahmad, Tirmidzi, An Nasa’i, Ibn Majah. Labeled as valid by Sheikh Al-Albani. See: Misykatul Mashabih no. 574]. Therefore, it is inappropriate for a muslim to celebrate the new year that costs himself of committing a grave sin.

Celebrating new year could also robs the person of one of the greatest virtue, i.e., the night prayer. From Abu Huraira, the Messenger of Allaah -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- declared,

“The best prayer after the compulsory is the night prayer.” [Narrated by Muslim no. 1163]. The night prayer is the best among the voluntary prayers, and the favorite of the pious men. Anyone who serves it can meet a great virtue, since the last third of the night is the time when someone’s du’a is most likely be granted. It is a great loss for whoever meet such night but wasting it instead, moreover if he does so due to following the western culture.

Sixth, Staying up late without need

The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- detested staying up late without any need approved the sharia. And it includes waiting for the time of the year turn, which is void of any good. It is narrated from Abu Barzah, that he said,

“The Messenger of Allaah -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- detested sleeping before Isya’ prayer, and chit-chatting after (without need, -ed). [Narrated by Bukhari no. 568]

Ibn Baththal explained the hadith, “The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- disliked to stay up late after the Isya’ prayer because he was keen on performing the night prayer, and he was afraid that he missed the fajr prayer in congregation.” ‘Umar Ibn Al Khaththab even slapped those who stayed up late after the Isya’ prayer, saying, “Are you staying up now in the beginning of the night, and soundly sleep later in its end?!,” [See: Syarh Al-Bukhari, by Ibn Baththal, 3/278, Asy Syamilah.] Let alone neglecting a compulsory prayer because of this vain act?

Seventh, Falling into Committing Adultery

It is an undeniable fact that the new year celebration among the youth is not free from free mixing between men and women, secluding in pair, or even worse, committing the real adultery. This is the real and sad realization, that often happens in that night, violating many of Allaah’s rules regarding mixing with opposite sex.

From Abu Huraira -may Allah be pleased with him- The Messenger of Allaah -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- said,

“Allah fixed the very portion of adultery which a man will indulge in. There would be no escape from it. The adultery of the eye is the lustful look and the adultery of the ears is listening to voluptuous (song or talk) and the adultery of the tongue is licentious speech and the adultery of the hand is the lustful grip (embrace) and the adultery of the feet is to walk (to the place) where he intends to commit adultery and the heart yearns and desires which he may or may not put into effect.” [Narrated by Muslim, hadith no. 6925]

Eighth, Disturbing Other Muslims

Celebrating new year by firing firecrackers, fireworks, blowing horns, and generating other loud noises, are among evildoings, since it disturbs other muslims, even disrupting the rest of people who need it best, such as the sick ones. Whereas disturbing other muslims is prohibited, as in the Prophet’s saying -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him-,

“A muslim is he whose words and actions do not harm others.” [Narrated by Bukhari no. 10, and Muslim no. 41].

Ibn Baththal said, “The meaning of this hadith is to motivate a muslim not to harm other muslims, whether by his words, acts, or any form of harms. Al-Hasan Al-Bashri said, “A good man is he who doesn’t harm, even if its just (harming) an ant.”” [See: Syarh Al-Bukhari, Ibnu Baththal, 1/38, Asy Syamilah]. Take heed of this beautiful quote from Al-Hasan Al-Bashri. If even harming a small ant is prohibited, let alone human being who has intelligence and feeling, that are harmed by the disturbing noises or even worse ?!

Ninth, Imitating The act of Satan by Spending Extravagantly

New year celebration is a huge act of spending money extravagantly in just one night. If every person approximately spends about IDR 10,000 to buy firecracker and other party paraphernalia for that night, and the amount of people celebrating it is 10 millions, how many money they spend totally just for a night? And what if they spend more? Exalted be He, how much money that is wasted in vain, burnt in buying firecrackers, fireworks, or to host a musical event, and so on?. All that while, Allaah the Exalted had decreed,

“(iii) Give to the near of kin his due, and also to the needy and the wayfarer. (iv) Do not squander your wealth wastefully, for those who squander wastefully are Satan’s brothers, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord. “(Al Isra’/The Night Journey: 26-27)

Ibn Katsir said, “Allaah wishes to deter men from being extravagant, by saying, ‘Do not squander your wealth wastefully, for those who squander wastefully are Satan’s brothers, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord. “ It is said so because by being extravagant, people are imitating the satan in one of his wickedness.

Ibn Mas’ud and Ibn ‘Abbas, said, “Tabdzir (extravagance) is spending money not in the right cause.” Mujahid said, “If, for example, there is a person who spends all his money in the right cause, then it is not considered as extravagance. But if someone spends even just a mud (a handful) in a wrong cause, it is what considered as extravagance. “ Qotadah said, “Extravagance is spending money in evildoing, commiting crime to Allaah, and in creating damages on earth.” [See: Tafsir Al Qur’an Al ‘Azhim, 5/69, in explanation of surah Al Isra’ verses no. 26-27]

Tenth, Wasting The Very Precious Time

Celebrating new year is considered as wasting time, something that we desperately need to spend in useful causes and not for empty excuses. The Prophet -peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him- had advised us regarding the indicator of good quality of Islam in oneself,

“One of indicators of islamic perfection (as a religion) in someone is leaving behind something that is not beneficial for him/her.” [Narrated by Tirmidzi. Syaikh Al-Albani in his book Shahih wa Dha’if Sunan Tirmidzi stated that this is a sound hadith.]

Brother, bear in mind that wasting precious time is similar to death, i.e, in loosing something we’ve owned before. Moreover, in reality, wasting time is worse than death.

Lets reflect upon Ibn Al Qayyim’s words, “(Know that) wasting time is worse than death. Wasting your time will cut you off of (make you neglect) Allaah and the hereafter. Whereas death only cut you off from the world and its residents.” [See: Al-Fawa’id, page. 33]

A muslim should be grateful to Allaah for the time He has gifted him. He should be grateful for it not by celebrating the new year, but by obeying and worshipping Him alone. That is the real essence of gratitude. As for those who waste their time, Allaah the Exalted has humiliated them, through His decree,

“(They will be told): “Did we not grant you an age long enough for anyone to take heed if he had wanted to take heed? Besides, there came a warner to you. ” (Faathir:37). Qatadah said, “Do good, since a long age will serve as evidence that can destroy you. Lets pray to Allaah for protection from spending our long age in vain.” [See: Tafsir Al-Qur’an Al-‘Azhim, 6/553, on explanation of surah Fathir verse no. 37.]

Those are among the evils of celebrating new year. There are other points that we haven’t managed to mention due to its plentiful number. However, based on these explained points, a muslim would certainly think a thousand times before doing it, because of the many damages it inflicts. To be a better person in the coming year is not by celebrating it, but by being grateful to Allaah for the time that He gives, by obeying His orders, and abandoning His prohibitions and fruitless acts. By keep on pondering, whether today is better than yesterday? Whether our faith increases by days, or the opposite? Those are the things that a muslim should always keep in mind, along with the passing of time.

O Allaah, please make better of the muslims of today. Please help our brothers who are far from the correct beliefs of Islam. Guide them so that they are able to know the correct teachings of Islam.

“I desire nothing but to set things right as far as I can. My succour is only with Allah. In Him have I put my trust, and to Him do I always turn.” (Huud:88)

All praises be to Allaah, Whose favors complete every goodness. Peace and prayer of Allaah be upon Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

Scholarly Fatwa regarding the Ruling of Exchanging New Year Greetings

The standing committee of Fatwa in Saudi Arabia, Al-Lajnah Ad-Daimah lil Buhuts Al-‘Ilmiyyah wal Ifta’ was asked,

“Is it allowed to say ‘Happy new year’ to the disbelievers, or happy new Hijria year or happy mawlid of the Prophet – peace and prayer of Allaah be upon him-, ?,”

Al-Lajnah Ad-Daimah answered,

“It is not allowed to offer congratulation in such celebration, because it is not the kind of celebration that is permitted in Islam.”

With Allaah all the guidance, peace and prayer of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
