Rulings regarding Producing and Selling Dolls

Question:

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatuh.

Ustadz, may Allah have mercy on you, I’d like to ask, what is the ruling for selling/producing dolls that imitate the living creature (for children), such as animal dolls, and what is the ruling if the dolls are of cartoon characters, such as Mickey Mouse, etc.

Thank you for your answer.

Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarokatuh.

Answer:

All praises be to Allah, peace and prayer of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.

Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Shaleh Al Uthaymeen -may Allah have mercy on him-, the member of Grand Jurists of Saudi Arabia kingdom was once asked about this matter, and his answer is as follows:

“The exception of children dolls from the prohibition of making statues and pictures is true, but the next thing is: What kind of doll that is being excepted, is it the old-fashioned doll which is not as detailed as today, and which has no eyes, mouth, nose, as the current dolls; or all kind of children dolls? This problem needs further study, and we need to be cautious in dealing with it. The safer way is to avoid the current type of dolls and to satisfy with the old-fashioned doll.”

And Allah knows best.
