ramadan mubarok

Just Once!

Month Ramadan is the month of Qur’an, the month where the Qur’an was revealed for the first time.

Allah the Exalted decreed,

During the month of Ramadan the Qur’an was sent down as a guidance to the people with Clear Signs of the true guidance and as the Criterion (between right and wrong).” (Chapter Al Baqarah/The Cow:185)

The Messenger of Allah made Ramadan as the time to recite the Qur’an; accompanied by Angel Gabriel, he finished the Qur’an while Angel Gabriel listened to his reciting. For the whole month, he finished the Qur’an once. Except in his last Ramadan, he finished it twice.

Likewise, the scholars followed the example of Allah’s messenger in this matter. They busied themselves during Ramadan by reciting the Qur’an. Among them were:

Imam Malik; when Ramadan came, he left his usual activity teaching hadith, and he concentrated more on reciting the Qur’an.

Sa’id Ibn Jubair finished his Qur’an recitation every two nights.

Qatadah always finished his recitation every 7 days. But during Ramadan, he finished it every three days. And when the last 10 days of Ramadan began, he finished it every day.

And many other examples from other scholars.

Realizing the Function of the Qur’an

To realize the function of the Qur’an as in the verse above, i.e., the guidance and clear signs for human being, it shouldn’t only become the object of recitation, but also become the object of study – of its meaning and wisdoms- ; people shall study its tafseer, only after that that the function will be achieved.

Therefore, we invite all muslims who read this article, to start a new step for this Ramadan, one that might never be taken before.

That is by finishing the Qur’an just once, provided that it is accompanied with reading its tafseer.

At least we may use one fourth of the way the companions memorized the Qur’an. The companions used to recite 10 verses, which they wouldn’t pass to the next verse except until they had understood the meaning of those 10 verses and realized its meaning.

Thus, prepare a copy of the Qur’an with interpretation, and start reading one juz (part) for one day. Read a page, and read its interpretation. And so on.

For you who had finished the Qur’an twice, thrice or even 10 times during Ramadan, just for this time, I ask you to change your reciting pattern. That is, by reciting the interpretation of the Qur’an and exploring its meaning even if you just finish it once.

As for the scholars that we’ve mentioned earlier, they are people who had understood the meaning of the Qur’an. Thus, no matter how often they finished it, we are sure that they understood the meaning and tafseer of the verses they read.

After practicing this suggestion in this Ramadan, by Allah’s permission, it’ll be easier for us to repeat is in the next months or the next Ramadan. Imagine if we can finish reading Qur’an interpretation every month, or every year, then one day, we can appreciate every thing recited by Imam during the congregational prayer; something that will increase our seriousness and devotion in prayer.
